BSG Professional Geomorphology November Webinar: Morphological evolution of Steart Marshes habitat restoration scheme

BSG Committee for Professional Geomorphology November Webinar

The British Society for Geomorphology Committee for Professional Geomorphology is pleased to invite you to our seminar series with guest speaker Dr Nigel Pontee presenting on the Morphological evolution of Steart Marshes habitat restoration scheme this month.

Dr Nigel Pontee is Jacobs’ Global Principal for Coastal Planning and Engineering and a Visiting Professor at the UK’s National Oceanography Centre. He specialises in coastal geomorphology, habitat restoration, nature-based resilience and blue carbon. He has helped create more than 1,700ha of wetland habitat in the UK, including some of its largest projects. Nigel actively contributes to the American Society of Civil Engineers NBS committee, the Joint Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management R&D Programme, and the UK Blue Carbon Forum. He currently chairs the PIANC working group on Blue Carbon.

Steart Marshes is one of the UK’s largest coastal habitat creation projects. This presentation will explain the project’s design process and the evolution of the site since its opening in 2014. The design process addressed numerous constraints, including existing infrastructure, protected species and archaeological sites. Post-implementation monitoring revealed significant geomorphological changes, particularly in the breach area and the creek system. The presentation will show how the project has influenced best practices in the design of managed realignment projects and has sparked further research into the role of such schemes in achieving Net Zero targets.
