BSG Windsor Workshop for PhD students at Cumberland Lodge, Windsor. See this year's dates below.

Windsor Workshop 09th Dec 2019 - 12th Dec 2019

Booking for the 2019 Windsor Postgraduate Workshop is now open! Thanks to a hefty subsidy from the BSG we have managed to keep the cost to a very low £125 - covering all food and lodgings from Monday evening to Thursday afternoon. Before being able to book, you must be a registered Postgraduate member of the BSG and be logged in to access the booking form.

In addition, two IAG bursaries of Eu300 available for the workshop (details below)

The BSG runs a workshop for new research students (typically in the first year of their PhD studies) each year and we encourage you to attend. The workshop has been running at the fantastic Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Great Park for over 30 years – many notable researchers and academics have been and benefited from this course!

The content is non-technical, but provides training in project management, group work, dealing with large data sets, fieldwork, lab and numerical modelling, gaining funding as well as publication and future career development. One of the most important aspects is meeting other new researchers, finding out how the PhD is working for others in different Universities and often making friends and contacts that can last a career. You’ll also meet a wide variety of academics and facilitators who are practising researchers as well as the BSG postgrad representatives on the Executive. The BSG chair will be giving a talk about his PhD experience, and Stuart Lane (Managing editor of ESPL) giving a session on publication. There will also be sessions from people working in industry and from the BSG postgraduates.

The cost of the course is heavily subsidised for BSG postgraduate research members (non members need to join the BSG at the excellent value postgraduate rate of £50 for four years). This gives you full evening meals, lunches, tea/coffee breaks (Monday afternoon to Thursday lunchtime) and accommodation in the ‘up market’ environment of Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Great Park. As well as being a former home to royalty, Cumberland lodge features in several feature films including the Kings Speech. You can find more information about the Lodge here: Cumberland Lodge

You may also be able to offset the time against any departmental postgraduate training credits.

Our best referral though is students who have attended in the past: Ask students who have been on previous years (or look in back issues of Geophemera on the website) about their experiences in past years – we gather that everyone enjoys it as well as finds it useful! Here is a blog post about last years workshop: Windsor Workshop 2016
