John Lewin is a former Chair of the BSG (BGRG) and is one of the leading fluvial geomorphologists of recent decades. He was one of the first to do research on river channel pattern changes over historical and short timescales, making significant contributions to understanding the dynamics of river meanders and the processes and sequences of morphological changes in river channels. He has made major contributions to the understanding of the mechanisms of sediment flux and floodplain sedimentation, including the influence of metal mining and problems of pollution, the development of palaeohydrology, and alluvial chronologies of terrace developments and floodplain sequences in Britain and the Mediterranean Region. In a career spanning 4 decades, he has published over 100 papers and chapters in books while progressing from Lecturer through to Professor and eventually Vice-Principal/Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Aberystwyth University, where he is now Emeritus Professor.
