Acclimatisation to Postgraduate Studies 1

1 Life is different
You have more freedom
You have less freedom

2 You will probably have more freedom to do what you want when you want in (academic) life hereafter.

3 You have now done ........ months as a postgraduate student

4 Ask yourself some questions, e.g.

Have you enjoyed it so far?
If not, why not?

Have you been bored?
If so why?

Do you know what you are doing yet?
If not, why not?

Sit down and Write Down

Take 10 minutes when you are feeling relaxed, sit down and write down responses to the following questions/topics.

Take about half a page for each topic on a blank sheet of paper and respond with two or three sentences for each.

The notions can be good or bad. You may well think of some responses to a question whilst answering others - if so fine, just add them to the appropriate section. There may be all sorts of other things you might like to put as headings, e.g. 'have I enjoyed my work?' just write them down where you feel most appropriate.

1 What you have learned academically in the last 10 weeks?
2 What you have learned about how to do research in those weeks?
3 How you have learned things about research methods/techniques etc.?
4 What you should report back to your supervisor about your research?
5 What do you really want to say to your supervisor?
6 Have you had need to revise your study/working practices?
7 Write down four academic things you want to study for your project in the next 6 months - then put them in a priority order
8 Write down four methods/techniques to help you do your work in the next 6 months - then put them in a priority order.
9 Do you want to change your topic or topic title? If so, why?
10 Note, approximately, when you last discussed your project with:

your supervisor
another member of academic staff
another postgraduate
another person not in the department (and can you explain your project to them?)

Now go to the next section.
