Geomorphology - BSG

Why do we do it?

As the professional organisation of British geomorphologists we are committed to improving and supporting postgraduate research into all areas of this discipline.

Exchange of ideas

There are over 800 BSG members, of which approximately 250 are postgraduates. Think of all those ideas you can share and how that could help your research degree! You can interact with other BSG members as soon as you join or at our first meeting, the Windsor Workshop every December.

Research training and job preparation

Through the training that we offer, we can guide you through all stage of your research degree from getting started and brainstorming, right through to writing journal papers and submitting your thesis. These skills will prepare you for an academic career, one in industry or in the company research environment.

Benefits

The BSG is affiliated with the Geological Society of London and is a study group of the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) and with the Institution of British Geographers (IBG). The BSG is also a founder member of the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG).

Amongst other events, the IAG organise an International conference every four years. There are often reduced conference fees for meetings associated with the BSG or affiliated bodies.

Reduced subscription (£38 for paper subscription per annum) to the BSG journal Earth Surface Processes & Landforms is offered to members together with reduced rates for other journals (e.g. Geomorphology) and books published in conjunction with John Wiley.

Fun!

All of us postgraduates are continuing our studies past degree level because we are interested in what we do. We have the opportunity to spend three years studying something that will benefit many people. Meeting in an informal atmosphere, chatting about our work and presenting it allow us to see the real benefits of our hard work. Fieldtrips and nights to the pub enable us to keep in touch with other young geomorphologists and enjoy ourselves, after all that’s what it’s really about.
