What do we do?The British Society for Geomorphology is the professional organisation of British geomorphologists, including research postgraduates. Our aim is to provide a community and services for all postgraduates who conduct research into geomorphology. ExpertiseWe have expertise in the following disciplines which we can pass on to you.
FundingWe also have a small amount of funding which could help your project in terms of research and publications, or for attending conferences. The BSG provides grants to aid and enhance field or laboratory research. Funding of up to £400 is available for identifiable items of research expenditure (e.g. process cost of a radiocarbon date or additional field equipment) rather than for a small contribution to a large total expenditure. The BSG has a small pot of money to help students attend conferences by contributing to the cost of registration, travel and accommodation. Students without research council funding or equivalent are particularly encouraged to apply. Grants up to £150 for UK events and up to £300 (exceptionally £500) for overseas events are available. There are 4 submission dates a year for both the research and publication fund and the conference fund; the end of September, December, March and May. PublicationsThere are 3 publications of Geophemera each year which are distributed to each BSG postgraduate member. The newsletter includes up to date information on BSG conferences and field meetings together with information of other events (International and UK based) convened by organisations other than the BSG. Reports on BSG events, working groups and new initiatives are also presented in Geophemera in addition to other news and articles of interest to geomorphologists. BSG post-graduate members are entitled to discounted rates on the BSG journal Earth Surface Processes & Landforms, reduced rates for other journals (e.g. Geomorphology) and books published in conjunction with John Wiley. Your research degreeThroughout your research degree, we have found that students make greater progress if they interact with their fellow postgraduates. Sharing of methods and material as well as chatting about your work is a great way to get some new ideas that will greatly enhance your project. Being involved in BSG postgraduate events is ideal for students as you can present and discuss your work amongst people of your own age and experience More details can be found on our Why do we do it? page. We can aid your research degree in a number of ways. You can attend our annual postgraduate workshop in December where we will train you in all aspects of geomorphological research. You can present your work at our annual informal postgraduate symposium in April, or at the main BSG conference each September. More details can be found on our How do we do it? page. |
