Click here 'Grand Challenges for the next 50 years' 50th Year Anniversary Conference of the British Society for Geomorphology (incorporating the BGRG)Venue: Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) Duration: Tuesday 31st August - 2nd September 2010 Programme Overview This year the BSG celebrates the 50th anniversary of the BGRG and the Annual Conference for 2010 reflects this, running in parallel with and located at the RGS (with IBG) Annual Conference in London. The RGS (with IBG) in August- September is hosting an Exhibition celebrating the past 50 years of the BGRG and BSG, and the conference is part of those celebrations. BSG has established a task force to identify the top geomorphological challenges that will face us over the next 50 years demonstrating how geomorphology will help society face a future given the current and projected climate, natural resource and economic uncertainties. The 'Grand Challenges for the next 50 years' theme will underpin the Conference programme. All bookings must be made through the RGS website: Click here. Details and schedule for registration will be release at a later date, but any presenting papers or posters who do not register by the deadline (when announced) will be withdrawn. Sec. Nominations for the Awards of the BSG for 2011Each year the BSG makes four awards in recognition of geomorphological excellence. All BSG Members are encouraged to consider the BSG Awards portfolio and to nominate suitably qualified individuals for the Linton, Warwick and Chorley Awards. The David Linton Award is given to a geomorphologist who has made a leading contribution to the discipline over a sustained period. The Gordon Warwick Award is presented to a younger geomorphologist in recognition of a named publication or set of publications. The Dick Chorley Award is given for the most significant original published contribution to geomorphology by a current or recently graduated post-graduate student. In addition, the Wiley-Blackwell Award is presented to the author(s) of the best paper published in Earth Surface Processes and Landforms in the preceding year, which will be 2009. The Wiley-Blackwell award is adjudicated on by the BSG Research Committee with guidance from the ESP&L Editor and Associate Editors. The Award winner delivers the Wiley-Blackwell lecture at the BSG Annual conference. The deadline for nominations is 30th September 2010, with the winners announced in early November. These deadlines have been moved earlier than in previous years, to enable better forward planning. The Linton and Warwick winners are invited to present the respective Award lectures at the BSG Annual Conference and to contribute a ‘State of Science’ paper to Earth Surface Processes and Landforms (January Issue of the following year). Awards of this nature are increasingly of great importance given the weight placed upon indicators of esteem in Research Quality assessments. Further details (eligibility and selection criteria) and the nominations forms are available from the BSG website: http://www.geomorphology.org.uk/pages/awards/. Professor John Thornes - in memoriamIt is great sadness that British Society for Geomorphology acknowledges the sudden passing of Professor John Thornes. He collapsed recently while doing field work and died shortly afterwards. John was a long standing member of the BGRG (now BSG), a former Chair of the BGRG in 1986/87 and recipient of the Linton Award in 1988. He was Chair of Geography, Bedford College (London), University of Bristol and Kings College London. John Thornes was a geomorphologist with special interests in hillslope hydrology and erosion processes in tropical rainforests and semi-arid environments. His passion for all things geomorphological and his charismatic leadership touched many of us, and his legacy is still and will remain highly visible in many research projects in the years to come. On behalf of the membership the BSG sends condolences to John's wife Rosemary and children Claire and Chris. Dr Richard Chiverrell. BSG Honorary Secretary. 23rd July 2008.Future BSG Annual General MeetingsThe BSG schedules the Annual Conference typically held in early July on a three year cycle, with the 2010 meeting to be held at the Royal Geographical Society followed by the University of Liverpool in 2011. Any institution or research body interested in hosting the 2012 Annual Conference is encouraged to contact the Honorary Secretary (Richard Chiverrell). |
