BSG Research Grants
Deadline(s): 30 September and 1 February
Grants are available: -
- to contribute towards specific costs of research (e.g., travel for research, consumables, small pilot projects)
- to establish fixed-term working groups to discuss and take forward specific developments or topic areas within geomorphology
- to set up and maintain long-term geomorphological monitoring
- to establish working groups to undertake the preliminary work required to develop proposals for Research Council thematic programmes
It is expected that the majority of awards will not exceed £1000. However, applications for up to £10000 will be considered where a strong strategic case for support is made. The BSG has ~£10000 per annum from the Wiley-Blackwell Fund available to support these larger applications. Applications should outline the full cost of the research. The BSG will pay up to 100% of the full eligible costs (grants are not awarded to cover full economic cost staff time). Applicants are required to provide details of how any additional costs associated with the project will be met (ie. those not requested from the Society) and indicate how the request for support relates to any existing projects. Where competition for grants is strong and applications are of equal scientific merit, preference may be given to applications for funding that can clearly lead to a large grant application to, for example, a Research Council or other major funding agency. Where funding is sought for dating costs, other bodies such as NERC should be approached first, unless the date is needed urgently or is for a single sample and therefore unlikely to attract NERC support. Grants are not intended for conference attendance.
Fixed-term working groups are intended to address areas in which rapid developments are taking place or in which key issues are arising which would be aided by increased communication between small communities of interested researchers. Working Groups will normally comprise 5-15 members but meetings will be advertised and open to all members. The BSG will provide funds to facilitate meetings, aid dissemination and publication of group research activity, and will fund up to 3 fixed-term groups at any one time.
Applications for funds to support long-term geomorphological monitoring should demonstrate that this will provide crucial information that is presently unavailable. It is expected that data collected during monitoring will be made available to members of the BSG and applicants will need to demonstrate how they will facilitate this.
All successful applicants are required to
- acknowledge BSG (Wiley-Blackwell) support where relevant (publications and conferences),
- provide a written report to the Research Subcommittee (which may be published in Geophemera),
- regard Earth Surface Processes and Landforms as the primary outlet for publication of papers and special issues.
- regard the RGS-IBG Book Series as an outlet for publishing authored monographs or edited volumes.
